Rail Track to Connect Pakistan, Afghanistan & Uzbekistan

Islamabad: According to news reports from July 18, the governments of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan are prepared to sign a collaborative agreement to build the 760 km UAP Railway linking the three nations. The Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (UAP) railway project’s route and specifics were finalised by the trilateral working group following a recent gathering.

Syed Mazhar Ali Shah, Chairman of Pakistan Railways, led the Pakistani delegation, Alhaj Bakhtulrehman Sharaft, Director General of Afghanistan Railways Authority, led the Afghan delegation, and Davron Dekhkanov, Director of the Transport Division of the Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade, led the Uzbek delegation.

According to the updates, the railway line will travel from Termiz in Uzbekistan to Afghanistan’s Logar and Mazar-i-Sharif before entering into Pakistan at the Kurram Kharlachi border crossing. The trilateral working group met for the second time since January during this meeting.

The UAP railway project would also be constructed to improve regional, transit, and bilateral trade between the neighbouring nations, according to the Ministry of Railways. This is not the only benefit; the railway project will improve inter-group interactions throughout the entire region. The railway line will support both passenger and cargo services, promoting trade and regional economic expansion.

Additionally, Uzbekistan claims that the 760-kilometer railway will likely result in a reduction of at least 40% in transportation costs and a significant shortening of goods delivery times between Uzbekistan and Pakistan, maybe by five days. The project is anticipated to be completed by 2027, when trains would be able to transport up to 15 million tonnes of goods annually.

In addition, a roadmap strategic plan was agreed a few years ago by Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan. The project seeks to build a 573-kilometer Trans-Afghan railway linking ports on the Arabian Sea in Central Asia. In accordance with its terms, a joint expedition will be led to examine the route’s terrain and conduct a preliminary feasibility study of the project.
