Singapore retailers charges for plastic bags

In a significant step towards waste reduction and environmental sustainability, Singapore has joined the ranks of countries implementing a policy that requires major supermarket chains to levy charges on plastic bags, albeit several years after similar initiatives were introduced in nations like South Korea and Japan.

Effective from 3rd July, this new policy mandates approximately 400 outlets, accounting for two-thirds of all supermarkets in Singapore, to impose a fee of at least S$0.05 ($0.04) for every disposable bag provided to shoppers.

It is important to note that this charge applies to bags made from any material. However, plastic bags remain the primary choice in renowned grocery establishments such as FairPrice, Sheng Siong, and Cold Storage.

By introducing this measure, Singapore aims to tackle the pressing issue of waste management and contribute to global efforts in addressing the climate crisis.

Implementing bag charges in supermarkets is expected to raise consumer awareness and encourage the adoption of more sustainable alternatives, fostering a culture of responsible consumption and waste reduction throughout the nation.
