Preparing for disaster: Evacuation and mock drills in flood-prone Pune villages

As the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Pune city and surrounding ghat regions, the District Collector’s office and Zilla Parishad began executing their disaster mitigation plan. With a high probability of weighty rainfall till July 25, authorities swiftly identified flood-prone villages and initiated measures to safeguard residents. Mock drills were conducted, and families from vulnerable areas were evacuated to safer locations as a precautionary measure. This comprehensive approach aims to minimize the impact of calamities like flash floods and landslides and ensure the local population’s safety.

Flood-prone areas evacuated

As part of the disaster mitigation plan, 17 households in Mulshi Taluka were shifted to secure open ground about two kilometers from their village. A temporary shelter was set up to provide a haven for the villagers in case of any emergency. The health facilities were also prepared to handle unforeseen circumstances by stocking up on medicine, staffing, and ambulances. The officials were instructed to remain at their headquarters to respond promptly to any crisis that might arise. Mock drills were carried out to test the authorities’ and volunteers’ readiness and preparedness in the event of a disaster.

Managing risks and maximizing preparedness

Fifty-nine flood-prone areas, including popular tourist spots like waterfalls, have been identified as high-risk regions. Each village has a dedicated team of volunteers ready to respond swiftly during emergencies. Special attention has been given to flood-proofing measures in Pune, considering the presence of numerous water storage structures, including 2,500 small dams and twelve large dams. Flash floods can occur suddenly due to rapidly rising water levels or dam releases during heavy rain. Breaches in small embankments can also lead to a sudden surge in water levels. These factors have been considered while developing disaster mitigation plans for the region.

Landslides and localized preparedness

Dealing with minor and significant landslides is another concern, prompting authorities to implement specific preventive measures. Disaster management plans are tailored to each village and district’s unique conditions, and regular training and orientation sessions are conducted to enhance readiness and vigilance in flood-prone areas. The presence of dams also plays a crucial role in flood prevention, contributing to the overall safety of the local population.

Building safer communities together

The District Collector’s office and Zilla Parishad collaborate closely to ensure comprehensive disaster management activities. Their coordinated efforts and localized strategies aim to minimize the negative impact of disasters and prioritize the safety of residents. By identifying vulnerable areas, conducting mock drills, and enhancing preparedness, Pune authorities strive to stay ahead of potential calamities and protect the well-being of their communities.
