Deluge Disaster: Assam Battling Torrential Floods, Over 1.2 Lakh Lives Affected Across 10 Districts

pproximately 120,000 individuals have been affected by the flooding in ten districts, highlighting the grim circumstances in the state.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has recently issued an ‘orange alert’ for several districts of Assam, indicating the prediction of ‘very heavy’ to ‘extremely heavy’ rainfall in the coming days. According to the IMD, the affected districts in Assam should be prepared for significant precipitation and its potential impact.According to the latest report by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Nalbari District has been severely affected, with approximately 45,000 people suffering due to the heavy rainfall. Baksa district follows with over 26,500 people affected, and Lakhimpur district with more than 25,000 people affected.

To provide assistance to those affected, the administration has set up 14 relief camps across five districts, accommodating 2,091 individuals. Additionally, 17 relief distribution centers have been established in these districts.

Rescue operations have been carried out by multiple agencies, including the Army, paramilitary forces, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire & Emergency Services (F&ES), civil administrations, NGOs, and local residents. So far, they have successfully rescued 1,280 individuals from various locations.

The flooding has resulted in significant damage across Assam, with 780 villages submerged and approximately 10,591.85 hectares of crop areas affected. Several districts, including Baksa, Barpeta, Sonitpur, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, South Salmara, and Udalguri, have witnessed massive erosions. Landslides have also been reported in Dima Hasao and Kamrup Metropolitan districts due to the heavy rainfall.

Furthermore, floodwaters have caused damage to embankments, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure in Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Sonitpur, Bongaigaon, Darrang, Chirang, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Udalguri, Dhemaji, and Majuli districts.
