Palkhi Procession: Pune’s Traffic Restrictions Lifted in Phased Manner

The Significance of the Palkhi Procession

The Palkhi Procession is integral to the annual ‘Pandharpur Wari’ pilgrimage, a deeply spiritual event celebrated by followers of Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj. The Palkhis carry the revered Paduka, symbolic footwear representing the saints, and embark on a three-week-long journey from the temple towns of Dehu and Alandi towards the holy city of Pandharpur. This arduous pilgrimage culminates on the auspicious occasion of Ashadhi Ekadashi, which falls on June 29 this year.

Traffic Restrictions: Ensuring a Smooth Journey

To facilitate the safe passage of the Palkhis and ensure the smooth flow of the Procession, the Pune city police implemented traffic restrictions along the designated routes. However, as the Palkhis reached their respective resting places in the evening, the city police began lifting the restrictions in a phased manner, allowing regular traffic to resume.

Resting Places and Resumed Journeys

On Tuesday, the Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi found solace at Nivdunga Vitthal Mandir, while the Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi rested at the Palkhi Vithoba Mandir in Pune. After a day of rest, both processions will resume their journeys towards Pandharpur on Wednesday, continuing their sacred mission. Reopening routes in Bopodi, Khadki, Sancheti hospital junction, Deccan area, and other locations, previously closed to accommodate the Palkhi procession, has eased the traffic flow.

Unity in Devotion: A Multitude of Participants

The Palkhi procession not only attracts the devout warkaris (pilgrims) but also witnesses active participation from Pune’s residents. As the Palkhis wind their way through the city streets, many citizens enthusiastically join the procession, immersing themselves in the spiritual fervour. This collective display of devotion highlights the Palkhi tradition’s profound impact on the people of Pune.

Embracing the Heritage: Pune’s Love for Tradition

Pune, known for its rich cultural heritage, embraces the Palkhi procession with open arms. The event brings spiritual fulfilment and acts as a unifying force, bridging communities and fostering a sense of togetherness. The Palkhi procession is a special occasion showcasing Pune’s deep reverence for its history and traditions.

The Palkhi procession in Pune stands as a testament to the unwavering faith and devotion of the people. As the traffic restrictions are gradually lifted, the city opens its arms to welcome the Palkhis and their followers. The Palkhi procession represents a religious journey and a celebration of unity, spirituality, and cultural heritage. With each passing year, this grand event continues to inspire and captivate the hearts of both devotees and residents, fostering a deep connection between the past and the present.
