Cyclone Biparjoy: Impact and Updates

Current Status and Intensity

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Biparjoy is anticipated to intensify further over the next 36 hours. As of the latest update, the cyclone was located over the east-central Arabian Sea, approximately 840 km west-southwest of Goa and 870 km west-southwest of Mumbai. The peak wind speed of Biparjoy is expected to reach 155-165 kmph, gusting to 180 kmph, later today.

Impact on West Coast and Southern States

The onset of the Monsoon in Kerala has paved the way for Cyclone Biparjoy’s arrival in the northeast and southern states within the next two days. While Kerala and south states brace for the impact of this cyclonic storm, there are concerns about a potential delay in the monsoon onset along the southwest coast. However, the IMD predicts average rainfall for India during the Southwest monsoon season despite evolving El Nino conditions.

Preparations and Safety Measures

Various authorities and district administrations in coastal parts of Gujarat, including Kutch, Jamnagar, Dwarka, and Porbandar, have initiated preparatory measures to ensure the safety of the population. Meetings have been conducted to discuss safety protocols, and ports have been advised to hoist signals following international procedures. Additionally, fishermen in Porbandar have been asked to return to the coast from deep sea areas, and evacuation plans for vulnerable coastal areas are underway.

Authorities in the Devbhumi Dwarka district have activated control rooms at taluka levels and disaster response teams to address any emergencies. Cyclone shelters equipped with essential facilities such as food, drinking water, and medicine have been set up along the coast of the Kutch district.

Mumbai and Potential Water-Logging

Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra, is also likely to experience rain as an effect of Cyclone Biparjoy. Consequently, arrangements have been made to tackle potential water-logging issues. Authorities have deployed pumping equipment and staff to address any flooding situations. Teams have been formed to warn people in temporary and makeshift settlements, urging them to stay vigilant and make alternate arrangements if necessary.

Impact on Karnataka and Northeast India

IMD officials have stated that Karnataka can expect monsoon rains within two days if the current conditions persist. Normal monsoon conditions are anticipated for the state, with slightly above-normal rainfall predicted in districts like Chamarajanagar, Bengaluru Rural, and the Malnad region in June.

Monsoon is also expected to reach the Northeast Indian states within the next 48 hours. The IMD’s extended range forecast suggests light to moderate widespread rainfall and thunderstorms in the region from June 9 to June 15 and June 16 to June 22. Although overall rainfall activity is likely to be normal to above normal, heavy rain is expected in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Sikkim on Sunday and Monday.

Delayed Monsoon in Delhi

The monsoon arrival in Delhi is projected to be delayed by approximately 5-6 days due to the delayed onset in Kerala. The national capital may witness light rain and cloudy conditions, accompanied by strong winds starting from Saturday onwards. The IMD predicts partly cloudy skies in Delhi for the next 6-7 days, with rain expected thereafter.

Weather Forecast for West Bengal

With the monsoon expected to arrive in the northeast, favourable conditions for its entry into West Bengal are anticipated by Sunday. Thunderstorms are forecasted for Sunday and Monday in coastal districts, including Kolkata, Howrah, and Hooghly. A heatwave warning is in effect for all sections except Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore until Saturday. Subsequently, the heatwave conditions will shift to Purulia, Bankura, and East and West Burdwan.

As Cyclone Biparjoy approaches its peak wind speed and continues to move northwestwards, it poses a potential impact on various regions along the west coast and southern states. Adequate preparations and safety measures are being undertaken to mitigate the risks associated with the cyclonic storm. Meanwhile, the monsoon is expected to reach Northeast India within the next 48 hours, while Delhi might experience a delayed arrival of the monsoon. Stay tuned for further updates on Cyclone Biparjoy and its aftermath.
