Super Eagles Moved To 28th In FIFA Ranking After AFCON Loss

Super Eagles made a significant jump in the Fifa Rankings, moving up from 42nd to 28th place worldwide.

This leap, the largest since 2013, comes on the heels of their commendable performance in the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they clinched the silver medal.

Despite falling short in the final match against hosts Ivory Coast, the team’s overall display earned them recognition on the global stage.

The rise in ranking reflects Nigeria’s resurgence in international football, with the team now occupying the third spot in Africa, a notable improvement from their previous sixth position. This achievement marks their highest ranking since May 2013, a period when they also held the 28th spot globally.

While the Super Eagles didn’t secure the AFCON title as they did in 2013, their journey to the final and commendable performance throughout the tournament contributed significantly to their upward trajectory in the FIFA rankings.

Notably, their only defeat in the competition came in the final match against Ivory Coast, underlining their resilience and competitiveness.

Joining Nigeria in the rankings boost are other AFCON participants, with Ivory Coast themselves climbing ten places to 39th globally, showcasing the tournament’s impact on participating nations’ standings.

Despite the disappointment of not clinching the title, the competition served as a platform for several African teams to improve their global standing.

Looking ahead, the Super Eagles will be aiming to build on their recent success as they prepare for upcoming international fixtures. With uncertainties surrounding their scheduled friendly against Argentina, the team is expected to announce alternative opponents for the March window before focusing on the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June.

The latest FIFA rankings reaffirm Nigeria’s status as a force to be reckoned with in African football, providing optimism and motivation for the team as they continue their quest for excellence on the international stage.
