It could be a battle of the backups at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday, as the Colts are set to host the Browns in Week 7.
The Browns stunned the football world last week by handing the 49ers their first loss of the season, beating San Francisco 19-17 at home. It wasn’t their $260 million QB who got the job done, as Deshaun Watson missed a second consecutive game. It was superb play on the defensive side of the ball that helped secure the win.
For the first time this season, Brock Purdy and the high-flying San Francisco offense looked human. Purdy ended the game with 12 completions on 27 attempts for 125 yards, a touchdown and an interception. It certainly helped the Browns that both Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey left the game, but Kevin Stefanski’s unit took advantage of the opportunity to improve to 3-2.
Meanwhile, the Colts dropped to 3-3 on the season after losing to the Jaguars for the second time this season. After Jacksonville spoiled Indianapolis’ home opener in Week 1, the Jags earned a victory on home soil, taking out the Colts 37-20 last Sunday.
With rookie QB Anthony Richardson sidelined by a shoulder injury, Gardner Minshew had the reins on offense. It didn’t go great for the journeyman signal caller, as his 329 passing yards were marred with three interceptions and just one touchdown.
The biggest news to watch is Watson’s status for Sunday’s game. He missed the last two games with a shoulder injury but could potentially make his return in Week 7. After rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson struggled in Week 5, the Browns went with P.J. Walker last week against the 49ers, and he could be in line for another start this week.
