Steparty is one of the leading contenders in the Caulfield Guineas

One of the main stallion making races in Australia is the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and the 2023 edition promises to be a cracker this Saturday.

Down below is a speed map, runner preview and $100 betting strategy for the 2023 Caulfield Guineas.

2023 Caulfield Guineas Speed Map

Rock Empire looks your leader, drawing soft and looking to hold a forward spot. Veight should hold a decent spot from the inside gate while drawn wide, Verdad will force the issue you’d think in sliding forward from the outset. Steparty has the early speed to land in a plum spot.

2023 Caulfield Guineas Runner Preview:

1. Militarize: It’s hard to get away from him. Was he a lucky winner of the Golden Rose? You can make a case to say yes, but you can also make a case to say he should have won by further given he was badly held up. The facts are that he is a three time Group l winner and of the five Group l races for this generation, he has won three. He’s a star and is seemingly racing like he will eat up the mile.

2. Little Brose: Blue Diamond winner who has been a bit one paced his past couple but for mine is racing like he will eat up 1600m. He ran in the Prelude and was no real threat to Steparty but didn’t mind the way he found the line late in the piece. If he can settle closer in the run, I think he’s good enough to be around the mark.

3. King Colorado: IMO, he’s poison odds at $7. He just looks like he wants further, whether it be the Cox Plate, Spring Champion of Derby. He has been solid in two runs back from a spell but to my eye, he wants 2000m+. If this becomes a brutally run mile, then potential egg on my face, but I’d want $15+ before saying he’s a bet.

4. Steparty: Beware the unbeaten horse. 5/5 to start his career for Paul Preusker, his win in the Prelude three weeks ago being enormous given he gave them a start and a beating in such an impressive display. Every indication is that he will love 1600m and has versatility re racing pattern. Appeals big time as one of the key chances.

5. Veight: If there is a knockout, then Veight is the horse. I was keen on him in the Prelude but he seemed to get on the wrong leg in the straight and threw the race away behind Steparty. He had a $3.60 SP in the Prelude so if you are an SP profile fan, he is the horse. Lane jumps back on and the tick over jumpout win was quite good.

6. Griff: IMO, the likes of Militarize, Steparty and Veight have a bit on the rest. But, this guy looks to be enjoying life in Melbourne. Gritty win in the Exford Plate then proved it was no fluke in the Stutt when sitting on speed and fighting on strongly to fend off Verdad. That does look inferior form, but hard to knock how he’s racing.

7. Scheelite: He does plenty wrong but clearly has an engine under the hood. Worked home with purpose in the Prelude and gets the headgear tinkering to try and straighten him up. Zahra sticks and he will be strong late…but can he put it together?

8. Scentify: Had every chance in the Prelude but that said, he wasn’t beaten far and close up in defeat behind Steparty. But, I don’t think he has the improvement to turn the tables.

9. Southport Tycoon: Ridden cold in the Prelude but was a real eye catcher late when warming to the task, finishing close up behind Steparty. Like Scentify, not sure he has enough to turn the tables, but can pinch a first four spot.

10. Wolfy: Steadily getting better with racing but the gate does makes things tricky. He can win, but it’ll be without me.

11. Verdad: I think he is a Vase/Derby type horse. He has the engine under the hood to measure up and be a good horse, but not sure he’s sharp enough for the mile.

12. Rock Empire: Had every chance in the Prelude and tired late. Extra 200m this time around, happy to let him go through to the keeper.

13. Limburg: Led and gave a kick in the Stutt Stakes but tired late to finish fourth to Griff. Not for me here.

14. Copacabana: $1.10 if he went to a maiden. Not good enough here.

15. The Longest Yard: Making up the numbers.
