Cheap Sports Cars Anyone Can Afford

Sports cars are a unique vehicle class in that they don’t have a utilitarian purpose. Trucks are for hauling and towing, SUVs are for getting the kids to soccer practice and moving your aunt’s weird ceramic cat collection, and passenger cars are for getting from point A to point B. Sports cars however were made to simply be enjoyed. Too often, these fun mobiles are quite pricey, but there are some solid sports rides most people can afford.

Sports cars hit the scene as toys for people with more money than responsibilities. From there they became associated with rich dudes dealing with a midlife crisis or a recent divorce. Finally, they were maligned as rides for people compensating for various shortcomings. Even if half of that is true, there’s no reason why wealthy insecure people should have all the fun of speeding down a winding road with the top down. The good news is, that not all sports cars are out of reach.

Almost nobody who isn’t named Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos can afford a Lamborghini Veneno and there’s a zero percent chance of a McLaren dealer with a finance department. Affordable is a relative term, especially in these economically depressed times, but $25,000 seems like an amount most people could come up with for a set of wheels. With that in mind, here are 10 great sports cars that virtually anyone could afford.

A sports car by definition is a two-door coupe, designed for performance and also probably to only barely seat two adults comfortably. The prices mentioned in this post, for the following sports cars were gathered from used car sites as well as Kelley Blue Book and Hagerty.

1 2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP

Price: $13,260

Bring a Trailer

The Solstice was a great little sports car that doesn’t get enough love, mostly because it came out right before GM got rid of the Pontiac division. It was the first two-seat sports car Pontiac built since they discontinued the Fierro in 1988, but it was a much more serious effort at sports cars. Instead of being a mini-Firebird, it had a sharp classic roadster style.

The 2009 Solstice GXP came with a 260-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that was technically the most powerful engine GM ever made. When you think about all the bruising muscle cars GM built from GTO Judges to Chevelle SS 454s, the Solstice GXP had the highest output engine with 2.1 horsepower per cubic inch of displacement. With that same ratio, a ’70 Chevelle would have been jamming 953 horses, which would have been cool.

2 2007 Toyota MR2 Spyder

Price: $13,827

MR2s have always been fun compact sports cars, but in the third generation, starting in 1999, Toyota decided to up the entertainment value by making it a convertible. Known as the MR2 Spyder in the United States, it was the car Toyota fans had been begging for to compete with the Mazda Miata. Although it didn’t have the most powerful engine, because of its size and weight, it was plenty quick.

The best thing about the last MR2 Spyder was that they had perfect handling. The steering, braking, acceleration, and suspension made it feel like the driver was one with the road. Another plus is that it was a solid-built Toyota that would easily give 250,000 to 300,000 miles of thrills and adventure. The fact that they can be picked up and used for around $13,000 only sweetens the pot.

3 2009 Honda S2000

Price: $14,961

Honda

Honda is known for making amazingly reliable cars that are kind of on the boring end of things. At the turn of the new millennium, however, they got a little crazy with the S2000 sports car. The two-seat roadster-style convertible was a bit of a departure for the Japanese automaker but was such an amazing ride that it is legitimately a neo-classic.

As one of the quickest naturally aspirated affordable sports cars, it is a favorite with street racers, amateur track racers, drifters, and weekend warriors. Despite its popularity and status as a classic-to-be, these spunky ragtops can be found for next to nothing. Because they were so popular, there are a ton of after-market bolt-ons to boost performance and style.

4 2007 BMW Z4 3.0si Coupé

Price: $15,547

Bring a Trailer

BMW came out with the Z4 in 2003, to replace the Z3. In reality, it was pretty much the same compact sports car, but apparently, the Z4 was exactly one better, whatever that means. Even more confusing, BMW made the Z8 in between the Z3 and Z4. In any case, the styling was a bit different, but the Z4 retained the quick responsive driving experience that the Z Series cars are known for.

The first-gen Z4s began as convertibles only, but BMW finally made a coupe in 2006, which took the fun roadster into serious sports car territory. The best thing about the Z4 is that it was made with BMW quality and luxury, but wasn’t a bank-buster. Now, these awesome sports cars can be picked up for very reasonable prices, in great condition, and with low mileage.

5 2016 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Price: $17,373

Hyundai

Hyundai first started selling cars in the U.S. with the Excel in 1987. It was ugly, underpowered, a poorly constructed model, but it was cheap as hell and gave the company a foothold. Since then, they’ve radically improved the styling, power, and quality of their rides and even made a pretty awesome sports car in the Genesis Coupe.

In addition to being a sports car, the Genesis Coupe is considered a luxury vehicle. It was only discontinued because Hyundai launched their luxury marque, Genisis Motor, and they were trying to avoid confusion. With the average used price for a 2016 Genesis Coupe at around $17,000, it is a solid pickup that won’t put you in the poor house but will help you fly by it in style.

6 2016 Subaru BRZ

Price: $20,145

Charles01/Wikimedia Commons

The Subaru BRZ is the same car as the Toyota 86, but there’s already a Toyota on this list so Subaru is getting all the love in this spot. The 2+2 sports car was a joint venture between the two Japanese automakers but was built entirely in Subaru’s Gunma assembly plant. Things get wackier because it was also sold as a Scion FR-S before Toyota’s low-end brand was discontinued.

The BRZ started life as a hybrid electric concept car but settled in as an attractive, agile sports car. In a review, Edmunds said the 2016 BRZ is for drivers, “who want nimble handling, peppy performance and good looks in a small package.” It is also for people who like a good deal because like-new used ones can be picked up for around $20,000.

7 2015 Nissan 370Z

Price: $23,159

Bring a Trailer

Nissan Z-cars have been some of the greatest sports cars on the road since 1969, back when they were Datsuns. While BMW only took the Z4 up by one from the previous generation, Nissan went crazy and amped the 350Z by 20 for the 370Z in 2008. It was also a complete redesign with new components, dimensions, and styling but still a speedy Z.

Nissan made some NISMO (Nissan Motorsports International) special editions with 350 horsepower, but there is nothing wrong with the 332 ponies under the hood of a standard 370Z. There is however an issue with the price in that a 2015 NISMO 370Z goes for more than $10,000 over the standard model. 10 grand for 18 extra horsepower seems a bit silly.

8 2009 Cadillac XLR

Price: $23,353

Bring a Trailer

Cadillac was founded on building enormous luxury vehicles and segued nicely into the new Millennium with their widely popular high-end SUVs. They also tried their hand at making compact performance sedans and sports cars, that were incredibly fast but never landed with the public. It probably has something to do with the fact that most people don’t associate nimble sports car performance with the Cadillac brand.

Power, Performance, and Price

Engine

That’s a shame because the XLR, manufactured from 2004 to 2009, was a tragically slept-on star in Cadillac’s lineup. It was a classy Corvette, sharing a platform, frame, and even a few body components with the Chevy sports car. Expectations were to sell between 5,000 and 7,000 units a year, but the best they did was 3,730 in 2005. While it was a new car failure, it’s a definite winner as a used car because these underappreciated rides are affordable and abundant.

9 1992 Dodge Stealth R/T Turbo

Price: $24,000

M4 Motorsports

The Dodge Stealth is a forgotten gem from the 90s that deserves some recognition. It was a collaborative effort with Mitsubishi, who sold it as a 3000GT. Dodge was in charge of the styling, which still holds up today, and Mitsubishi did the mechanics. The three-door touring coupe, was all-wheel drive, really fast, and the ultimate American sports car until the Viper knocked it off the line.

Power, Performance, and Price

The average used price for a 1990-1996 Stealth is $5,891 which would be an awesome deal if such a car could be found. Alternately, M4 Motorsports has a green 1992 Stealth R/T Turbo with only 22,628 miles on it, which is almost like getting a new one, for $24,000. A quick search of various car sites shows that there are dozens of similar low-mileage Stealth R/T Turbos in the $15-20,000 range which is a killer price for an awesome sports car.

10 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata

$24,800

Mazda took a chance launching the Miata two-seat sports car in 1989, because there was nothing like it at the time, nor was there an indication there was any demand. The gamble paid off because it was an instant success and has since built up an almost cult-like following of believers. Based on classic British and Italian sports cars, the Miata proved zippy little roadsters are timeless.

The Miata started great, but with each successive generation has gotten more style and speed, making them even more amazing rides. The amazement continues because they are super-affordable like this used 2016 MX-5 Miata that sold recently on Bring a Trailer for $24,800. Equipped with a supercharged I-4 and with only 11,000 miles, it was a steal. The beauty is, there are plenty of similar deals out there on forth-gen Miatas.
