Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 8 seed, edged out Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, 7-5 to reach the last 16 of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The world No 8 was given a stern test by the Frenchman, who played well above his ranking of 73rd in the world.

Having dropped the first set, Rublev was forced to up his intensity in the second, breaking early to secure an early lead that was enough to see him gain parity at one set all.

The third went by quickly, as Rinderknech started to leak errors.

But the fourth was a close and lengthy affair, with Rublev taking an early break before being pegged back to 5-5 by the Frenchman, who had cut out the unforced errors.

The Russian was able to gain the crucial final break in the last game of the match, however, as Rinderknech was serving to take the fourth to a tiebreak.

Rublev, ranked No 8, will play Jack Draper next.

Ahead of his victory, the Russian Beat French lucky loser Arthur Cazaux (6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-1) and Frenchman Gael Monfils (6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1).

Rinderknech, ranked No 73, won against Argentinian Diego Schwartzman (6-3, 6-4, 6-2) and Italian Matteo Berrettini (6-4, 5-3 ret.) earlier in the tournament.
