It’s Shergar Cup Day, and top tipster and journalist, Ed Quigley aka ‘Longshot Ted’ serves up his best bets for all the action on Saturday.

Ascot 1.35 – Tis Marvellous 

I am going to roll the dice with TIS MARVELLOUS on the basis that the nine-year-old drops back to 5f, but significantly returns to this venue, a track which traditionally the veteran sprinter has done very well at. The Clive Cox representative has four C&D wins on the CV – a record which cannot be sniffed at.

A multiple winner at Listed level in his pomp, he has now slipped back down to 102 – the same mark as when last successful in a Handicap, which came in this race two years ago. Ground should be fine, and he shouldn’t be overlooked with Arc winning jockey Luke Morris taking the ride. 

Haydock 2.25 – Poet Master

The unexposed POET MASTER has made a real impression so far, winning both starts in minor company in good style. The latter of those was over 7f at this venue, where the Lope De Vega gelding powered clear inside the closing stages, looking better the further he went.

Naturally, the step up to 1m looks a smart move on the basis of what we saw there, and he should have a lot more to offer as he delves into Handicap company for the first time off a mark of 92. The big field scenario shouldn’t pose much of an issue given that he likes to be ridden forwards and I like the untapped potential of this gelding.

Sam James takes the ride for the Karl Burke team who have been in good form and this three-year-old can handle this step up in class here.

Ascot 2.45 – Pride Of Priory

This can go the way of last year’s winner PRIDE OF PRIORY who represents the red-hot William Haggas stable. The five-year-old stayed on well to land this 12 months ago, and after shooting up in the weights in the aftermath, he has eased back down to a mark of 92 – the same rating as when successful in this last year.

He showed signs of coming nicely back to the boil when third at Ripon last time out, despite being weak in the market and sent off as the outsider of the field. A return to his happy hunting ground is a big tick in the box, and with Frankie Dettori on board, a bold bid for the follow up in this contest can be expected.

Haggas has a strong hand in this encounter, as he is also represented by La Yakel, but the preference is for the defending champion to come out on top once again. 

Haydock 3.00 – Al Aasy

For all his quirks, the supremely talented Al Aasy has won two of his last three starts, and as officially the best horse in the field with a BHA rating of 113, he can stamp his authority over his rivals in the Group 3 Rose Of Lancaster Stakes.

He was well beaten at Newmarket last month on the back of a 420-day absence, but came roaring back to success in a Listed event last time out at Newbury, when clearly benefiting for that reappearance in regards to fitness. It is also worth noting that the son of Sea The Stars looked happier back at 10f, which is no surprise for this strong-traveller.

Jim Crowley takes the ride on this 6-year-old who is a multiple winner at this level. With the William Haggas team in rude health at present he should take all the beating.

Newmarket 4.15 – Lethal Levi each-way

Young Brandon Wilkie has been making a lot of people sit up and take note recently, but the 7lb claim could come in very valuable as he takes the ride on the Karl Burke trained LETHAL LEVI.

The 4-year-old shapes as though this step up 7f can unlock further improvement, and when you dovetail in the Newmarket factor, there is every chance he could bounce back to winning ways. Lethal Levi has a record at the course of two wins and one place from three visits, and off a mark of 98, he could easily get in the shake-up here.

He ran a solid race when fifth to Aberama Gold at York last time out – form which looks red hot given the winner went on to score at Glorious Goodwood on his following start. This looks a suitable assignment for Lethal Levi who can get in the mix from an each-way point of view.
