Horse racing tips: Ascot, Haydock, Newmarket and Curragh – ITV Racing Saturday picks

Terrestrial racing fans are in for a treat on Saturday afternoon as ITV brings a bumper 10-race offering with Ascot, Haydock, Newmarket and the Curragh all featuring.

It is Shergar Cup day at Ascot and all six races from there are live, while two from Haydock include the Group 3 Rose of Lancaster Stakes. At Newmarket, there is the Group 3 Sweet Solera, while last – but certainly not least – the Group 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes comes from Ireland.

ITV Racing is on air from 1.10pm to 5.00pm on ITV4 and our racing expert has selections for every terrestrial race.

1.35, Ascot – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash (5f, Handicap)

Tis Marvellous has won two of the past four renewals of this contest and may bounce back after a disappointing run in the Wokingham here in June. But preference is for INTRINSIC BOND, a winner over course and distance a fortnight ago on first start for this yard. He was up on the pace throughout and found plenty late on – and could make it 2-2 here.

Selection: Intrinsic Bond @ 4/1 with Betfred

2.10, Ascot – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers (2m, Handicap)

THE VERY MAN found only a well-placed and thriving Teed Up too strong in a valuable contest on the level at Galway 12 days ago, and Jessica Harrington’s veteran crosses the Irish Sea with strong credentials on the basis of that effort. Zoffee could put Northumberland Plate disappointment behind him and play a role, while Prydwen is also shortlisted.

Selection: The Very Man @ 6/1 with Betfred

2.25, Haydock – Betfred ‘Play Fred’s 5 Million’ Handicap (1m)

Poet Master is now 2-2 after easily landing a 7f novice here early last month and trainer Karl Burke will hope there is more to come from the exciting three-year-old, though the form of that win here last time has taken some knocks. KATHAB was entitled to land his Ripon maiden last month and did so nicely. The William Haggas-trained gelding gets 7lb from Poet Master and could be the better option.

Selection: Kathab @ 11/2 with Betfred

2.45, Ascot – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge (1m 4f, Handicap)

William Haggas has a strong hand here, as last year’s winner Pride Of Priory, with  Frankie Dettori in the saddle, goes again. But stablemate LA YAKEL ran a race full of promise when second over course and distance four weeks ago on his first start of the year. He has Joao Moreira on his back this afternoon and the lightly raced four-year-old is open to plenty more progress.

Selection: La Yakel @ 7/2 with Betfred

3.00, Haydock – Betfred Rose Of Lancaster Stakes (1m 2½f, Group 3)

Al Aasy held off Phantom Flight with a degree of comfort in a Listed contest at Newbury three weeks ago and comes here with a strong chance, while Charlie Appleby’s King Of Conquest is probably better than he showed at Royal Ascot and could rebound. MIDNIGHT MILE is the sole three-year-old in the line-up and Richard Fahey’s filly comes here after a win last time at York and with plenty in her favour getting weight from this field.

Selection: Midnight Mile @ 11/2 with Betfred

3.20, Ascot – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile (1m, Handicap)

Kodiac gelding Rainbow Fire should relish both track and trip and could go well, while a revived showing from Positive Impact is not ruled out for the Simon and Ed Crisford team, with Hayley Turner in the plate. EMPIRESTATEOFMIND perhaps did not have the race run to suit when a close fifth over course and distance a fortnight ago but John Quinn’s charge has a chance of better, especially with Dettori doing the driving.

Selection: Empirestateofmind @ 8/1 with Betfred

3.40, Newmarket – Aspall Cyder 1728 Sweet Solera Stakes (7f, Fillies’ Group 3)

WILD GODDESS patently did not do herself justice on debut at Haydock early last month but showed the benefit of that outing when scoring by four lengths over course and distance a fortnight later. She was quite professional there and the Camelot filly could be a useful sort in the second half of the season for Charlie Appleby and William Buick.

Selection: Wild Goddess @ 9/2 with Betfred

3.55, Ascot – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Classic (1m 4f, Handicap)

FRENCH INVASION travelled with plenty of purpose at Goodwood over this trip on testing ground recently on seasonal/turf bow before going out like a light. Connections thought enough of the dual all-weather winner to enlist Dettori that day and his finishing effort was too poor to be true. He has one or two questions to answer but the handicapper has eased him 3lb and Charlie Johnston’s colt, this time with Tom Marquand in the saddle, could outrun a big price.

Selection: French Invasion @ 18/1 with Betfred

4.30, Ascot – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint (6f, Handicap)

Quinault has won all six starts since late spring and it would be hard to suggest he is done improving. The handicapper applies another 7lb now, however, and his run may end. At the prices, he is worth taking on. Last-time-out winners Batal Dubai and Zaman Jemil are respected but DARK TROOPER supplemented his Yarmouth success with a fairly smooth win at Haydock over this trip six days ago – and a mere 3lb more may not halt his winning sequence for Ed Walker and Saffie Osborne now.

Selection: Dark Trooper @ 17/2 with Betfred

4.40, Curragh – Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (6f, Group 1)

BUCANERO FUERTE had to be game to get back on top of Unquestionable when winning the Railway Stakes over course and distance six weeks ago, and Adrian Murray’s two-year-olds are clearly a sparkling bunch. This son of Wootton Bassett surely has more to come and can once more trump the Ballydoyle inmate and the dangerous unbeaten Caravaggio filly Porta Fortuna for Donnacha O’Brien and Oisin Murphy en route to success in this Group 1 sprint for the youngsters.

Selection: Bucanero Fuerte @ 5/2 with Betfred
