With basketball behind them, the Bulldogs turned into full-time tourists on Thursday, which was fitting considering both towns are full of visitors this time of year. Georgia bused from its team hotel to a small marina for a chartered boat to Amalfi, a town that lends its name for the Italian coastal region featuring several dramatic hill towns.
During the two-hour trek the boat first passed between the Italian mainland and the island of Capri, moving from the Gulf of Naples into the Gulf of Salerno in the process. The vessel continued past Positano, where tour guides showed the team an island several hundred yards from the city which is known as a vacation destination for LeBron James.
After arriving in Amalfi, the team was led to the piazza at the base of the steps to the Cathedral in Amalfi. The church is largely dedicated to Saint Andrew, the first of Jesus’ disciples, whose remains serve as the relics for the church. Following lunch, several of the players shopped before virtually everyone ended up at the beach and in the sea.
Georgia’s travel party regrouped for the shorter boat ride back to Positano, which features a larger beach and larger crowds. Again, most players worked their way back to the ocean for rest and relaxation.
The Bulldogs waited patiently for their charter to return to the dock as two larger ferries jockeyed for position. Once cleared to approach shore, the team quickly boarded the private charter and enjoyed spectacular late-afternoon views before arriving back at the hotel for dinner on their own in Sorrento.
