Night Out

• Upper Chichester Township Police Department will host Night Out from 6 to 8 p.m. at Chichester Middle School, 925 Meetinghouse Road, Boothwyn. The event will have moon bounces, food trucks, giveaways and much more. Any group or business that would like to participate can email Ray Fuller at [email protected].

• The Prospect Park Police Department and Prospect Park Fire Department and many other community members will join together to present a Night Out event from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in Park Square.

• Edgmont Township will hold a Night Out from 6 to 8 p.m. at Edgmont Township Fire Company, 1010 Gradyville Road. Everyone is invited to stop by the firehouse to see the trucks and equipment up close and meet the firefighters as well as Pennsylvania State Police. Also, the Middletown Library will have activities for children. All questions about the event can be directed to [email protected].

• The Springfield Township Police Department will host its annual Night Out event from 6 to 8 p.m. at Springfield Country Club, 400 W. Sproul Road. This is an opportunity to come out and meet local law enforcement officers and first responders, as well as other community groups and organizations. The family-friendly event will include numerous moon bounces, rock wall, dunk tank, music and food. The free event is made possible by local donors.

• Aston Township Police Department will team with The Aston Township Police Relief Association, Aston Township Fire Department, Aston Township, the Brookhaven Police Department and the Brookhaven Fire Department, to host Night Out from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Aston Community Center, 3270 Concord Road, Aston Township. Attendees can meet local first responders and check out displays of emergency vehicles, equipment and more. Games, prizes, police cars, fire trucks and more will be featured, for people of all ages. • The Ridley Township commissioners and township police department will present Night Out from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ridley Township Municipal Building, 100 E. MacDade Blvd., Folsom. Everyone is invited for a free night of music, giveaways, games, inflatable obstacle course, photo booth, dunk tank, police and fire equipment display and much more. There will also be moon bounces for the children and refreshments for all.

• The Sharon Hill Police Department’s second annual National Night Out from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Academy Park High School parking lot, 300 Calcon Hook Road.

• Lansdowne and East Lansdowne police will be joining forces from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Highland Avenue parking lot next to the Lansdowne Fire Company, 26 N. Highland Ave.

Neighborhoods are invited every year to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the National Night Out, celebrating its 40th anniversary. Night Out is designed to heighten drug prevention awareness, generate support for anticrime efforts, encourage neighborhood spirit, and strengthen community partnerships, especially with law enforcement and first responders.

Arts in the Park

As part of the Friends of Glen Providence Park’s annual events, the 2023 free Arts in the Park monthly performance series on Saturday nights in Media, has announced its summer lineup:

• On Aug. 12, “Gong with the Didge” will take the audience on a sacred and meditative journey in sound with instruments from around the world, including didgeridoo, gongs, conch shells, Vibraphone and percussion.

• On Sept. 16, entertainment will be by Brian Kors and Lone Star Revue, a fun band that draws inspiration from the many threads of roots music that flowed from places like New Orleans, Memphis and more.

The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum: will host a free family fishing day noon to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10 at the site, 8601 Lindbergh Blvd. No fishing license is required. Volunteers will help visitors hook their first fish. Rods and bait will be available for loan or visitors can bring their own. All ages are welcome. The Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish Alumni & Friends: will hold Cornhole Tournament for a Cause, Saturday, Aug. 19 in Nelson Hall on the Notre Dame’s campus, 990 Fairview Road, Swarthmore. It is a team, double-elimination tournament. Thanks to their generous sponsors, the tournament will award first prize of $1,000 and second prize of $600. Registration is now open and limited to the first 32 teams that sign up. The event also includes an outdoor barbecue with hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, chips, soft pretzels and cookies, with assorted beverages from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Advanced tickets are not required for lunch and the community is welcome. The Delaware County Chamber of Commerce: will hold a volunteer fair Tuesday, Aug. 8 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Penn State Brandywine, 25 Yearsley Mill Road, Media. Set-up for nonprofits begins at 8:30 a.m. Nonprofits and community groups can talk to attendees about their organization and its volunteer opportunities and attendees can hear from local nonprofits on many ways to volunteer at somewhere with a mission that they are passionate about, right in their own backyards. St. John Chrysostom Parish: in Wallingford will host an American Heart Association CPR and AED training class from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26. The class is free, including materials. The class will cover CPR, choking and use of an automated external defibrillator for adults, children and infants. Space is limited. Registration is required. The Show For Hope III: will be held on Sunday, Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Coebourn Elementary School, 1 Coebourn Blvd., Brookhaven. The third Show for Hope will benefit the Hope for Hallie Organization. Free to spectators, the car show will feature all years, makes, models, and types of vehicles and feature music, raffles, 50/50, food, local vendors and more. Gates open at 9 a.m. Also, there will be a small ceremony dedicating the adjacent Butterfly Sanctuary in Brookhaven during the show, from 1 to 3 p.m. The Hallie Christine Jackson Butterfly Sanctuary was created to have a space dedicated to mental health and the protection of butterflies and other species. Volunteers will maintain the site. Hallie tragically lost her life in 2019. The sanctuary was named in her memory. For more information, visit http://hopeforhallie.org.

Tyler Arboretum: will hold “Summer Sky Fireside,” from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 28. The event is free with regular admission and no registration is necessary. This special after-hours event invites people to appreciate the wonders of nature, experience the joy of family time outdoors, and be part of a collective effort to preserve the environment. The event will feature food trucks, beer, music, hand-crafted lemonade, ice cream, lawn games, chalk fun, bubble machine, a story time at Lucille’s Garden, tours and education stations and more. Visitors can explore Tyler’s gardens, take a walk on the scenic loop and Native Woodland Walk or meander leisurely through the arboretum. Main Line Health: will offer four free summer sessions of their virtual SmokeFREE program via Zoom. The six-week session will assist tobacco users and nicotine vapers to quit. Sessions include stress management, coping strategies, and relapse prevention information. Participants may be eligible to receive free nicotine replacement therapy.

They are:

• Wednesdays, Aug. 16 to Sept. 20, noon to 1 p.m.

• Tuesdays, Aug. 22 to Sept. 26, 1 to 2 p.m.

• Fridays, Sept. 8 to Oct. 13, 2 to 3 p.m.

The Coalition of Italian American Organizations of Delaware County (CIAO Delco): will host a night at the Blue Rocks, Wednesday, Aug. 2 to see the Blue Rocks take on Hudson Valley. Gates to Frawley Stadium in Wilmington will open at 5:45 p.m. for Italian Heritage Night. Everyone who attends can enjoy Italian heritage-inspired in-game entertainment and activities throughout the game. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive an Italian Heritage banner. The Marcus Hook 37th annual: Summer Concert Series, Down By the River, continues Tuesday, Aug. 1 with the Fabulous Grease Band from 7 to 9 p.m. in Market Square Memorial Park, 7 E. Delaware Ave. Closing the series on Tuesday Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. is Quaker City String Band. Food and light refreshments will be available for purchase at the park. On Aug. 8, Auntie Anne’s Pretzel Truck will be on site. Marcus Hook Borough Council presents this year’s series with the support of the following sponsors: Energy Transfer, The Jacono Family, Alan McIlvain Co., Monroe Energy and PECO. Calvary Baptist Church: 1616 W. Second St., Chester, will present New York Times Best Selling Author Jonathan Eig in conversation with the senior pastor, the Rev. Keith Dickens, at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28. The discussion will center around Jonathan Eig’s new book, “King: A Life.” The event is of special significance because of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s time as a Crozer Theological Seminary intern from 1948 to 1951 at Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. J. Pius Barbour. In addition, the book discussion and signing will take place on Aug. 28, which is the 60th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington for jobs and freedom. Immediately following the book discussion, Eig will sign books in the fellowship hall of the church. Books will be available for purchase on the night of the event. The Rose Tree- Media Optimist Club: will hold its next flea market, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20 at Delaware County Community College. The rain date is scheduled for Aug. 27. The show is at 3:30 p.m. and there will be time for slot play and a $25 voucher to play. Cost is $75, and a $25 deposit is due by July 11 to hold a seat.

A trip to the Tropicana Casino to see a “Doo Wop Christmas” starring the Doo Wop Project on Nov. 30. Celebrate the sounds of the season with this uplifting and energized performance. The Doo Wop Project has appeared on public television. Cost is $75, with $25 back for slot play. A deposit of $25 is due at time of booking and the balance is due by Oct. 30.
