Swedish coffee chain Espresso House has announced a new licensing agreement with Autogrill Deutschland to scale its presence at airports and railway stations across Germany.

Lund-based Espresso House currently operates 40 stores across Germany, including outlets at railway stations in Hanover, Potsdam and Gottingen.

In March 2023, the group announced a new license agreement with MF KAESO GmbH to expand into North Rhine-Westphalia and is expected to open its first franchised store in Cologne later this year.

Espresso House said the Autogrill partnership will enable it to welcome ‘large numbers of travellers to many new coffee shops during the years to come’.

The collaboration marks a ‘significant milestone’ for both businesses and will ‘create unparalleled coffee experiences for travellers across Germany’, Autogrill Deutschland added.

Founded in 1996, Espresso House currently has more than 500 stores across Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Germany. The coffee chain has operated in Germany since 2018, when it acquired and rebranded Hamburg-based Balzac Coffee.

Travel concession operator Autogrill entered Germany in 2005, managing several units at Frankfurt Airport. The Italian business also operates concessions at Hamburg, Stuttgart and Düsseldorf airports.
