There can be no denying that the recently finished 2022/23 Campaign has been a resounding success for the blue half of Milan.

Inter did have a disappointing start to the campaign and were down as low as ninth in the Serie A standings following four wins and four defeats in their first eight games.

With Napoli winning 13 of their first 15 games, drawing the other two, a second Scudetto in three seasons was a distinct improbability from the outset, but the way the Nerazzurri fought back throughout the second half of the campaign was admirable. 

It was Simone Inzaghi’s side that handed the eventual champions Napoli their first defeat of the campaign back in January.

They would pick up further impressive victories against AC Milan, Juventus, Lazio, Roma, and Atalanta before the season was over. But it was in the cup competitions where they truly shone. 

Inter’s impressive Knockout Campaign

Inter secured the Italian Super Cup back in January with an impressive 3-0 dismantling of cross-city rivals AC Milan in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Then, victories over Parma, Atalanta, Juventus, and eventually Fiorentina in the final added the Coppa Italia to their collection.

And on the continental stage, the Nerazzurri confirmed that they had returned as a European powerhouse once more. 

Despite being drawn in a challenging UEFA Champions’ League group alongside Bayern Munich and Barcelona, Inzaghi’s men managed to finish ahead of the Catalonians to secure their spot in the knockout stages.

There, they would defeat Portuguese duo FC Porto and Benfica before beating Milan once again in a Derby della Madonnina Champions League semifinal.

That set up a first appearance in the final of the continent’s premier club competition in 13 years however, English powerhouses Manchester City would ultimately have too much for Inter, despite a heroic performance from the Italian outfit.

Another man that is expected to leave is central defender Milan Škriniar. The Slovenian international has missed most of the campaign with an injury and with his contract expiring at the end of June, he is highly expected to seek pastures new in the coming weeks.

Paris Saint-Germain is thought to be the frontrunners in the hunt for his signature. Another report that has surfaced in recent days is a potential transfer of superstar midfielder Nicolò Barella.

Oil-rich English Premier League side Newcastle United are known admirers of the Italian international. Throughout the last four years, the 26-year-old has developed into one of the finest midfielders on the continent, and his departure would be a bitter blow for Simone Inzaghi. 

New Arrivals

A positive for the Nerazzurri faithful appears to be that a replacement for the soon-to-be departed Škriniar has already been identified in the form of former Napoli captain Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Senegalese international has had a disappointing year following his €38m move to Chelsea last summer, and a return to Italy on a season-long loan could be just the tonic to resurrect his career.

The Stamford Bridge outfit forked out a whopping €300m+ on new arrivals in January alone and with defenders such as Wesley Fofana, Benoît Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, and Thiago Silva already at the club, the 31-year-old’s departure looks increasingly likely. 

Failing that, there have also been rumors about the arrivals of talented young defenders such as Anderlecht’s Zeno Debast and Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini. Both those players are just 19 years of age, and they could be gems for the future.

Further up the field, Inter have also been linked with a move for 23-year-old Sassuolo midfielder Davide Frattesi, and he may well be the man chosen to replace Barella, should the 26-year-old head to St. James’ Park.
