Biography of Munshi Premchand

On July 31, 1880, in Lamhi, a small village of Banaras, where Premchand ji was born. Premchand ji was from a small and ordinary family. His grandfather Gur Sahai Rai, who was a Patwari, and father, Ajaib Rai, who was a post master. His life had gone through a lot of struggles since childhood. When Premchand ji was just eight years old, his mother died of a serious illness.

Due to the death of his mother at a very young age, Premchand ji could not get the love of his parents since childhood. Due to government job, father was transferred to Gorakhpur and after some time father got married again. Step mother never adopted Premchand ji completely. He had a special attachment towards Hindi since his childhood. For which he himself started trying, and started it with small novels. According to his interest, he used to read small novels. With this interest in reading, he started working at a book wholesaler.

Due to which he spent his entire day fulfilling his hobby of reading books. Premchand ji was very simple and easy-going, kind-hearted. Never used to argue with anyone unnecessarily, was always ready to help others. He had immense faith in God. In order to overcome the financial crisis, initially he got a job with a lawyer on a monthly salary of five rupees. Gradually, he made himself well versed in every subject, the benefit of which he got in the form of a good job. And was appointed as the principal of a missionary school. He fought every kind of struggle, smilingly and finally, took his last breath on 8 October 1936.

Education of Munshi Premchand

Premchand ji’s early education started at the age of seven from a small madrasa in his own village Lamhi. Staying in Madrasa, he got knowledge of Urdu and little bit of English language along with Hindi.

While doing this, gradually on his own strength, he furthered his education and got admission in a college in Banaras for further graduation. Due to financial constraints, I had to leave my studies midway. Passed matriculation with great difficulties. But he did not give up on any study of life, and after studying again in 1919, he got BA degree.

Marriage of Munshi Premchand

Premchand ji was fighting the battle of luck since childhood. The pampering and happiness of the family was never received properly. Due to old customs, under the pressure of his father, he got married at a very young age, at the age of fifteen. This marriage of Premchand ji was done without his consent, without asking him, with such a girl who was very quarrelsome in nature and was ugly. Father got married only after seeing the daughter of a rich family.

In a short time, father also died, the entire burden fell on Premchand ji. A time came when even after his job, he had to sell his valuables and run his house at the time of need. At a very young age, the entire burden of the household fell on him alone. Because of that, Premchand did not get along with his first wife at all, due to which he divorced her. And after some time had passed, he married a second wife of his choice, at the age of about twenty-five, to a widow. Premchand ji’s second marriage was very prosperous, after that, he got progress day by day.

Working style of Munshi Premchand

Premchand ji was active in his work since childhood. Despite many difficulties, he did not give up till the last moment. And till the last moment he kept doing one thing or the other, and not only in Hindi but also in Urdu, he left behind his invaluable writings.

  • After leaving Lamhi village, he lived in Kanpur for at least four years, and staying there he met the editor of a magazine, and got several articles and stories published. Meanwhile, wrote many poems for the freedom movement as well.
  • Gradually, his stories, poems, articles etc. started getting a lot of appreciation from the people. Due to which he was promoted and transferred to Gorakhpur. Here too, publications kept coming one after the other, in the meantime, he kept his active participation in Mahatma Gandhi’s movement by supporting him. Some of his novels were published in Hindi and some in Urdu.
  • In 1921, after consulting his wife, he came to Banaras and decided to leave the government job. And focused on writing according to his interest. After a time, to bring a new change in his writing interest, he insisted on trying his luck in the cinema world, and he reached Mumbai and also wrote scripts for some films, but luck did not support him and that film Could not complete. Due to which Premchand ji had to bear the loss and finally he decided to leave Mumbai and came back to Banaras. In this way, in life, by making every effort and hard work, he tried till his last breath.
