Dussehra 2023: Unveiling the History, Significance and Importance of Vijaydashami

Significance of Dussehra: Triumph of Good Over Evil

In Indian culture, Dussehra also known as “Vijayadashami,” is regarded as the most significant holiday and is celebrated with great reverence. It signifies the conclusion of the four or five-day Durga Puja celebration and the nine-day Navratri festivities.

This holy day is extremely significant in mythology since it is said to commemorate the moment that the forces of good overcame evil and led by Lord Rama to kill the devil Lord Ravana and his army. Since then, the celebration of this significant victory has been known as Vijay Dashami, or the Day of Triumph.

In addition, Dussehra commemorates the day that the goddess Durga faced and defeated Mahishasura’s formidable army, thus bringing the buffalo monster to justice. The festival, which is observed with great zeal throughout India, conveys the important lesson that virtue triumphs over evil.

Vijayadashmi: History

This year, October 24 is Dussehra. Drik Panchang has said that the Dashami Tithi would include the auspicious Puja hour. The Tithi begins at 5:45 p.m. on October 23 and ends at 3:14 p.m. on October 24.

Though there are differences between Dashami and Dussehra, they both celebrate the victory of virtue over evil.

Vibrant Ramlila performances light up the streets on this day, especially in the country’s northern regions. These businesses use plays and songs to eloquently depict the life and courage of the truthful Lord Rama.

Dussehra and Its Connection to Diwali

The celebration of Diwali begins with Dussehra. It occurs twenty days before to the light festival commemorating the return of Lord Lakshman, Maa Sita, and Lord Rama. The theme of Vijayadashami is the victory of light over darkness and of good over evil.

Hindus pray to God on this day in hopes of prosperity and good health. In addition, certain regions of the country place great significance on adoring the Shami tree on the day of Vijayadashami since it is said that Arjun concealed his weapons there during his banishment.

  • Aparajita Puja –Offerings to the goddess Aparajita suggest the unwavering spirit of virtue.
  • Seema Avalanghan –Crossing the line is a practise that represents expanding one’s perspectives and overcoming limitations.
  • Shastra Puja or Ayudha Puja – The goddess Durga vanquished a demon during Vijayadashami. The gods worshipped her weapons after her victory. On this day, devotees worship their own tools and weapons, presenting them to the goddess as a sign of respect.

Dussehra Celebrations Across India

In North India and other regions of the country, effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhkaran, and his courageous son Meghnad are burned in observance of Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami.

Every nine days during Navratri, the act of Rama’s narrative, known as Ramlila, is arranged. On the tenth day, Ravana is killed to wrap it up. Dussehra also means getting rid of sins or negative traits, because Ravana’s 10 heads stand for one such trait.

In Bengal, worshippers bid Maa Durga a fond farewell by submerging her idols in bodies of water. They also ask the Goddess to return the following year, guarding them and chasing away all the bad luck and sorrows.
