Vicky Kaushal Transforms into Sam Bahadur, the First Field Marshal in Biographical Film

Vicky Kaushal Returns as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw

Vicky Kaushal is back donning the uniform of the Indian Army. No, it’s not for the follow-up to his hugely successful military action film from 2019, Uri: The Surgical Strike, which took home the National Film Award. This time, it’s a biographical film about Sam Bahadur, aka Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. The teaser for the movie, which debuted on Friday, features Vicky changing into the country’s first field marshal.

Even though Vicky resembles Sam Bahadur from the 1960s and 1970s, there is a strong Uri influence in both his attitude and the film’s milieu. Vicky, in the role of Sam, is seen encouraging his fellow army soldiers, nearly giving us the impression that he would soon be busting out in his well-known line from Aditya Dhar’s film, “How’s the Josh.”

Even portions of his conversation, such as the one he says at the conclusion of the teaser to the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi (played by Fatima Sana Sheikh), is tonally very similar to the Uri universe. He responds by saying that a soldier’s mission is to kill the soldiers on the other side when Indira reminds him that a soldier’s role is to die on the battlefield.

The fact that Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Pictures, the production company that funded both of the military films, is another possible reason for the parallels. After their successful 2018 spy thriller Raazi, director Meghna Gulzar and Vicky have collaborated again for Sam Bahadur.

Who was Sam Bahadur?

In 1971, during the India-Pakistan War, Sam Bahadur served as Chief of Staff of the Army. In addition, he was the first official in the Indian Army to be promoted to the position of field marshal. Almost fifty years and five wars—including World War II—were fought during his career. The Padma Vibhushan Award, India’s second-highest civilian honor, was given to him. Every year on December 16, people commemorate Vijay Diwas, a day commemorating India’s triumph over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which was led by him.
