Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a leader of the Congress and the opposition in the Lok Sabha, asserted that the new Constitution copies given to lawmakers at the new Parliament building did not contain phrases like “socialist and secular,” which are mentioned in India’s preamble.
The Preamble of the new copy of the Constitution that were handed to us today (19 September), the one we had in our hands as we entered the new Parliament building, does not contain the words “socialist secular.” We are aware that the words were inserted following an amendment in 1976, but it would be concerning if someone handed us a current copy of the Constitution without those terms.
Chowdhury questions the government’s motivations. “Their intent is suspicious,” he declared. It was executed deftly. Something concerns me. I endeavored to raise this matter, yet I was not allowed the opportunity to do as such.
As a component of the 42nd Amendment to the Constitution, which was ordered in 1976 during the Crisis upheld by the then-head of the state Indira Gandhi, the words “communist” and “common” were added to the preface. To convince the populace that minorities would be secure and that the wealthy class would not control the economy, the phrases socialist and secular were added.
Why did Indira Gandhi reinstate secularism after Nehru had dropped it
Jawahar Lal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister, and BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, both firmly believed in the concept of secularism.Not with standing, both were reluctant to utilize “mainstream” when it was incorporated.
In spite of the fact that they are totally mindful of the term’s genuine importance, they couldn’t involve it in an Indian setting. Ambedkar avoided including secularism in India’s preamble by saying, “What should be the policy of the State, how the Society should be organized in its social and economic side are issues that the People themselves must decide on in light of the Time and Circumstances. Since stating that in the Constitution would utterly destroy democracy, it cannot be included there.
Nehru’s perspectives on secularism were, “It is an ideal to be focused on and not a solitary one of us can say in his innermost self that he has no bias and no impurity of communalism to him or heart, whether we are Hindus or Muslims, Sikhs or Christians, anything that we are.“
In spite of not explicitly incorporate “secularism” in the Constitution, the Constituent Gathering acknowledged Articles 25, 26, and 27. The phrase was part of the constitutional doctrine.

On June 26, 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi announced on All India Radio that the president has proclaimed Emergency.A 20-page comprehensive document gave the Parliament previously unheard-of powers. Almost all of the Constitution’s remaining parts, including the introduction, were changed. The introduction now refers to India as a “sovereign, communist, common, majority rule republic,” rather than calling it a “sovereign, vote based republic.”
