Rajini Meets Yogi: Analyzing the Picture -Just Fun or Deeper Meaning?

His films always have an event when they come out, and Jailer is no different. But even as the movie generates buzz in theatres and gets closer to the Rs 500 crore mark, Rajinikanth is, as usual, creating just as much commotion off-screen.

The huge singer recently made a bizarre tour of Uttar Pradesh, where he appeared to support both the chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, and Raja Bhaiyya, a recurring character in UP politics. Rajinikanth also stopped by the Army Command Centre in Lucknow and the Ram shrine in Ayodhya to offer prayers.

The meeting between Rajinikanth and Adityanath, during which the actor lowered himself to touch the chief executive’s feet, attracted the most attention. This was a “betrayal” by a celebrity whose followers revere him as God in the eyes of many fans, including those who consider Adityanath as the embodiment of everything that is repugnant to Tamil Nadu politics and culture.

There was talk about how Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and his Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan, both ardent anti-BJP figures, had seen Jailer just before the photo of the Lucknow meeting surfaced.

Soon after, an old video of atheist Kamal Hassan, a fellow Tamil actor and aspiring politician, talking about “never touching the feet of anyone, even God,” appeared online. The minister of education for Kerala, V Sivankutty, made the quip: “Stretching and bending are always good, but the way (Rajinikanth) bent, he could have broken (his) back in two.”

It’s not about impressing people, he claims, and Rajinikanth hasn’t shown the same “respect” for past prime ministers Narasimha Rao and A. B. Vajpayee, as well as the late M. G. Ramachandran, J. Jayalalithaa, and M. Karunanidhi. “Rajini never takes action for selfish reasons. In UP, he touched a yogi’s feet rather than a BJP chief minister, claims Shankar.

Others mention Rajinikanth’s ties to Karnataka. Hindu mutts in Karnataka are quite powerful, whereas they are marginal in Tamil Nadu because of the dominating Dravidian philosophy.

Rajinikanth’s older brother Satyanarayana Rao Gaekwad characterised him as “very humble” in an interview with The Indian Express from 2018 and added: “Till he was 18, he visited the Ramakrishna Mutt near our Bangalore house every day.”
