Indonesia Open Badminton: PV Sindhu Avenges Consecutive Losses, Defeats Local Favourite Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in First Round.

PV At her home tournament for the Indonesia Open World Tour Super 1000, Sindhu defeated Gregoria Mariska Tunjung 21-19, 21-15 after overturning defeats in their previous two meetings. Sindhu put up a commanding display when competing at Jakarta’s renowned Istora, remaining steady and attacking while winning in 38 minutes.

With the help of her well-known deception techniques, Tunjung had previously defeated Sindhu at the Spain Masters and last month in the semifinals of the Malaysia Masters. However, on Tuesday, the Indian remained solid and stepped up his attack after winning the first game 21-19, while the Indonesian was extremely prone to errors from both ends of the court.

While Tunjung continued to make mistakes, frequently hitting wide with cross-winner attempts, Sindhu took advantage of her offensive instincts by catching the shuttle early and higher as well. In order to avoid being overpowered like in their previous two encounters, Sindhu went on a run of five straight points after falling behind 10-8. Despite the fact that Sindhu was anticipating better on the day and covered more territory in effective defence, Tunjung’s drop shots allowed her level the match at 14-14. The Indian quickly took the lead, 19-15, and fended off Tunjung’s challenge to score the game’s first goal.

In the second, Sindhu hit several steep smashes to snuff out any threat that Tunjung might have posed because the Indonesian was simply too mired in errors to come close to building a comeback. Her head-to-head record improved to 8-2 as a result, but more importantly, the losing streak was broken.

“Compared to my prior two losses, I was better prepared. In the forecourt and backcourt, I was better able to anticipate moves and cover the corners. I used to make simple errors. Not any longer,” Sindhu would later declare to the neighbourhood press at the Super 1000 competition.

She will attempt to snap an eight-match losing streak dating back to August 2019 when she next faces Tai Tzu-Ying. Despite having a record of 18-5 overall, Sindhu has been shown more initiative in her attack after letting go of her defensive tendencies.
