While the previous closure in March proceeded smoothly, officials caution that the upcoming construction work is more intricate and is therefore less likely to finish ahead of schedule. Wade explained, "We’re lifting 72 concrete beams into position, and it’s a lot more precise and intricate. The works will take longer."
Despite assurances from National Highways that contingencies are in place, motorists are advised to anticipate delays and to plan their journeys accordingly. Wade stressed the significance of clear signage and messaging in managing traffic flow, noting that the success of diversion routes hinges upon the cooperation of drivers.
Furthermore, drivers are warned against following larger vehicles onto alternative routes, as this may result in longer diversions and increased congestion. Wade cautioned, "You’ll certainly have a quiet night in," in reference to the potential pitfalls of blindly following other vehicles.
In addition to concerns about traffic management, authorities are urging motorists to be mindful of entering clean air zones and to avoid inadvertently incurring Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charges. Those relying on satellite navigation systems are advised to exercise caution, as these may not always account for road closures or environmental restrictions.
Despite the anticipated disruptions, efforts are being made to minimize inconvenience for affected motorists. An exception to the main diversion route will be made for guests booked into the Ramada hotel at Cobham Services on the M25, who will receive a "special escort" from junction 9.
