SZA Reflects on 'SOS' Chart Success

SZA's journey with her album SOS took an unexpected turn. In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, the acclaimed singer confessed, “I didn’t think I’d be No. 1 at all,” expressing her surprise at the album's tremendous success. She admitted to anticipating stiff competition from Taylor Swift, saying, “I thought Taylor was going to dust me.”

Solána further reflected on her creative process, revealing, “I don’t know what n***as wanna hear from me. I never know when things are going to be popular. I never know what songs people are going to attach to.”

Released after a gap of five and a half years following her debut CTRL, SOS exceeded all expectations. The album secured SZA her inaugural No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. What's more, an impressive 21 out of the record's 23 tracks found their place on the Billboard Hot 100, with "Kill Bill" ultimately clinching the top spot.

Recently, SZA unveiled a new version of her SOS track "Snooze" featuring Justin Bieber in mid-September. This followed the release of the original version's music video at the end of August, featuring appearances from Bieber, Benny Blanco, Woody McClain, and Young Mazino, all portraying failed lovers.

On the same day as the updated "Snooze," SZA dropped her first collaboration with Drake, the track "Slime You Out." The song is slated to be part of Drake's highly anticipated album, For All the Dogs.

In another revelation from her Rolling Stone interview, Terrence "Punch" Henderson, co-president of Top Dawg Entertainment, disclosed that he made the decision to pull SZA from performing at the 2023 MTV VMAs when she wasn't nominated for Artist of the Year. This move highlights the ongoing conversation surrounding recognition and acknowledgment within the music industry.
