Ramadan Fast: NSCIA Urges Muslims To Look Out For New Moon

Muslims in Nigeria have been asked by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) to keep an eye out for the new crescent (moon) of Ramadan 1444AH beginning on Wednesday.

In a statement issued by its director of administration, Zubairu Usman-Ugwu, the supreme Islamic authority said that the hunt for the new moon should begin as soon as dusk falls on Wednesday, 29 Sha’aban, 1444 AH, which is comparable to March 22, 2023.

According to Mr. Usman-Ugwu, the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sa’a Abubakar III, would proclaim Thursday, March 23, 2023, to be the first day of Ramadan 1444 AH if Muslims see the moon on the specified evening.

He said that Friday, March 24, 2023 would essentially become the first day of Ramadan if the crescent is not seen that day.

Muslims throughout the globe mark Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, as a time for fasting, prayer, introspection, and giving to those in need.
