UFC 294 suffered setbacks when fighters were forced out of the top two bouts less than two weeks before the event. The promotion scrambled and managed to put together replacements that made for an even more interesting card.
After Charles Oliveira was forced out of his title bout with lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski answered the UFC’s call. Volkanovski lost a tight battle with Makhachev in February and has been champing at the bit for a rematch and pounced on the opportunity despite short notice.
Similarly, Paulo Costa suffered an injury and was pulled from his place on the card facing Khamzat Chimaev. In need of a short-notice replacement, former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman stepped up to face Chimaev, who has dominated nearly every opponent he has ever shared the cage with.
