OTTAWA, Oct 3 (Reuters) – Ontario regional transit operator Metrolinx said its Toronto-area commuter trains were halted Tuesday afternoon after a system failure at Canadian National Railway Co (CNR.TO) led to signal issues at rail corridors.
“There is a CN networkwide system failure that is affecting all of our rail corridors. Trains will continue to hold at the nearest stations,” Go Transit parent Metrolinx said in a statement.
GO trains connect Union Station in Toronto’s downtown core to suburbs and small towns in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area. Some 70 million passengers use GO trains and buses annually, or about 190,000 people everyday, according to GO Transit’s website.
Some passengers took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to report being stuck or to seek assistance.
“Is there any ETA for this issue to be resolved… please I need to pick up my kid from school and I am struck here.. please help,” one passenger said .
“So how are you proposing we get home from work today?” another X user wrote.
GO Transit said it was working with CN to resolve the issue.
CN did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
