Naomi Osaka joins the tennis motherhood club as she gives birth

Former world No 1 Naomi Osaka has officially joined the motherhood club on the WTA Tour as she has given birth to her first child.

Osaka and her boyfriend Cordae welcomed a baby girl in Los Angeles with the rapper initially announcing the happy news during his show at the Calgary Stampede over the weekend.

A source has since confirmed the birth of the couple’s first child, telling PEOPLE Magazine that mother and daughter “are doing well”.

After announcing her pregnancy in January, four-time Grand Slam winner Osaka revealed in June that she was expecting a girl as she shared images of the gender reveal party on Instagram with the theme of the event pink and a caption reading: “A little princess is on the way”.

However, the proud parents are yet to introduce their bundle of joy to their fans on social media.

Osaka is the third former world No 1 and multiple Grand Slam winner to give birth this year as three-time major champion Angelique Kerber became a mother to a girl in February before Ashleigh Barty – also a three-time Slam winner – announced last week that she gave birth to a boy.

While Barty has officially retired, Kerber and Osaka have both made it clear that they plan to return to competitive tennis with the latter saying she hopes to return at the 2024 Australian Open.

The 25-year-old not only dreams of winning more Grand Slams and Olympic gold with next year’s Paris Games high on her agenda, saying: ” “I want to try to win the Olympics next year. It makes me very excited to return to the sport… It’s something that’s going to make me very happy.”

However, another big goal is being a tennis-playing mother.

“I’m most excited about being able to have a kid in the stands watching me play tennis, and them being able to say ‘Hey, that’s my mom on the court,”” she told Today.

She added: “Tennis takes a lot of patience — whether that’s patience with the time it takes to develop a training routine and get in the best shape possible, or patience on the court when waiting for the perfect shot to close the point.

“I know parenthood will require a lot of patience in many other ways and I’m really just feeling optimistic and grateful for all that’s ahead.”
