Makeover: Giving a modern, layering look to lovely long hair

It’s time for Ashley to embrace a modern shag haircut and style

My client Ashley, 37, is an artist embarking on new beginnings and wanted a fresh, new look to compliment her new endeavours.

Ashley has very long and thick hair. It hadn’t been cut in quite some time, was feeling very dry and was unmanageable. While she was scheduled for a highlight colour service, I suggested we postpone that and instead have some fun with her haircut. She’s had long hair for many years, and it was time for a modern shag.

I cleansed her hair with Oribe – Signature Shampoo and Conditioner and added extra hydration to her mid-lengths and ends with Oribe – Supershine Moisturizing Cream. I eliminated several inches from her length to incorporate short, round and effortless layers throughout her hair to help created body and movement. The face-framing fringe is the focal point of this cut and will grow out beautifully, should she wish to do that in the future.

Before styling I applied Oribe – Crème for Style and hand-dried her hair to encourage her natural texture. I used a round brush to soften the front of her hair and used a curling wand to enhance her natural waves. To finish the look, I sprayed Oribe – Flash Form Finishing Spray Wax for weightless, buildable and long-lasting hold.

Makeup:

I kept Ashley’s makeup very simple, starting with a light application of sheer foundation and dusting of bronzer to warm up her complexion. Next, I showed her how to use a 3-in-1 beauty product for eyes, cheeks and lip, to enhance her features. Her brows are naturally full and fluffy, so I set them with a brow gel, giving her an easy and effortless five-minute makeup look.

Makeup Used:

Foundation: MAC Face and Body Foundation.
