“It’s Made Me A Bit Emotional”- Tim Paine Opens Up On Choice To Step Down From First-Class Cricket

Tim Paine, a former Australian Test captain, claimed that once he decided to stop playing first-class cricket, his phone started acting strangely. He continued by expressing how moved he was by the encouraging words he had received from all over the world.

After Tasmania’s season-ending Sheffield Shield match against Queensland in Hobart last week, Paine, 38, quietly said goodbye to his domestic career.

He captained the nation in 23 Test matches before being forced to step down just before the 2021–22 Ashes due to some inappropriate text messages he had with a Cricket Tasmania teammate a few years prior.

Paine took a mental health vacation after resigning as captain of Australia and was never selected to play for the country again. Paine was reported by AAP in an ESPNcricinfo report as stating on his decision to retire from first-class cricket: “I just wanted to have one more year with Tassie and finish on a positive note with some good memories. To come back and do that, it was nice to finish on my home ground”

Tim Paine commented on the reactions to his choice to resign: “My phone has been going berserk, from all around the world as well, which is nice. It’s made me a bit emotional reading some of the messages and social media stuff people have sent.”

Tim Paine played in 154 matches for the first-class team, scoring 6490 runs at an average of 46.31, including three hundred and 35 fifty-sevens.

Tim Paine recalls his cricketing career:

As an Australian cricketer, the keeper-batter had a rocky career. After Steve Smith was fired for his involvement in the 2018 ball-tampering controversy, he was named Australia’s Test captain.

The batsman listed winning Tasmania’s maiden Sheffield Shield title in 2006–07 as one of his career highlights, in addition to making his Test debut. He said: “To play in that [Tasmania] team with Damien Wright, Michael Di Venuto, and Dan Marsh and guys I looked up to and them having long careers and never being able to win, I think that was a real moment I’ll never forget.”

Tim Paine represented Australia in 35 Tests, 35 ODIs, and 12 T20Is between 2009 and 2021.
