This Vintage Portrait Is Going Viral for the Freakiest Reason

Home might be where the heart is, but if we’re being honest, it can also be the backdrop for your very own horror movie. (In this corner of the internet, we are especially spooked by trap doors hiding in plain sight, shadowy figures in the background of an otherwise ordinary selfie, and hidden messages left beneath a layer of wallpaper.) But what if it wasn’t your home that was freaking you out, but something bought for your space?

Enter the cursed portrait, which is currently taking over X, formerly known as Twitter. It all started when audio producer and food writer Lucy Dearlove was walking past the Hastings Advice & Representation Centre in the United Kingdom, saw an illustration of a little girl, and added a picture of the storefront to her feed. Sure, the subject’s glare was slightly off-putting, but what made this picture downright terrifying is that it came with a sign that read, “She’s back!!! Sold twice and returned twice! Are you brave enough???”

Though some people are convinced this was a clever marketing ploy, a suspicious illustration that was returned twice put the Twitterverse on high-alert. “I am not brave enough,” one person wrote. “I ain’t about to be taken by a Polly Portrait Poltergeist.” “God help you if you don’t notice the asymmetry in the eyes before it is TOO LATE,” another replied.”Don’t bring it in the house, whatever you do.” There was even one user who tagged thrill enthusiast M. Night Shyamalan.

But this creepy picture isn’t exactly a new internet phenomenon. Another user named Juliet Brando resurfaced a tweet from last month that explained her friend bought the reportedly cursed picture. (The user even posted a picture of the same illustration; however, this time it came with a sold sign and piece of paper that read, “Possibly cursed?”) Brando didn’t make up this story on her own: She had recognized this illustration from a post she spotted on Facebook. According to a followup tweet, Sharpe asked her Facebook acquaintance about the picture—only to receive the reply, “According to the guy in the shop, she took it back because it threw her life into chaos…” *Shudder*

In other words, there’s a creepy picture that’s already brought bad juju to at least two people—and might be looking for its next target. Terrified? Slightly confused? Honestly, we don’t blame you.

But while Dearlove’s post has been going viral, the creative wants the attention to be focused elsewhere. “I have absolutely nothing further to say about this,” she wrote in a followup tweet. “I took a photo of a closed shop window and walked off that’s literally the story. You should absolutely be donating to the charity who sold it.”
