NZTA repairs just the beginning of post-Gabrielle recovery, says Central Hawke’s Bay leader

The Central Hawke's Bay District Council in New Zealand is facing a shortfall of $129 million to repair roads damaged by Cyclone Gabrielle. The NZ Transport Agency will fund a $36 million work program to repair 24 roads and bridges by June 2024, but it is not enough to complete the job. The council's chief executive, Doug Tate, expressed uncertainty about central government's contribution, leaving the possibility that the council and ratepayers may have to find a way to pay for it. Urgent repairs are also scheduled for 2023.
