Chemical Engineers Find Ways To Transform Plastic Into Fuel Onboard A Ship

Chemical engineers at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts have developed a process called hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) that can Transform Plastic waste into fuel on board diesel ships. The process, known as "blue diesel," aims to save time, money, and reduce emissions by eliminating the need for ships to make time-consuming trips to the mainland for offloading plastic and refueling. The project received a $259,000 grant from the National Science Foundation and could also benefit river navigation by reducing fuel consumption. The technology is still in the early stages, but it shows promise for addressing plastic pollution and fuel consumption in maritime operations.
