Kenya: Nations negotiate terms of plastics treaty in Nairobi

Negotiations for a global treaty to combat Plastic pollution have begun in Nairobi, with tensions expected as countries debate what should be included in the pact. Last year, 175 countries agreed to conclude a UN treaty by 2024 to address plastic pollution. However, there are differing opinions on the content of the treaty, with some nations calling for binding rules to reduce plastic production, while others prefer to focus on recycling and waste management. Plastic production has doubled in 20 years, and without action, it could triple again by 2060. The negotiations aim to conclude next year for adoption by mid-2025.
