Plastic’s life-cycle costs overwhelmingly fall on poor countries

Plastic production disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries, with the costs of Plastic across its life cycle being at least eight times higher for these countries compared to high-income countries, according to an analysis by WWF. Poorer countries lack the infrastructure to manage plastic waste, leading to health risks and environmental pollution. The report calls for policies to reduce plastic production and fund waste management in developing countries, as negotiations for a global plastics treaty take place this week. The treaty should include legally binding obligations to reduce plastic production and eliminate harmful plastic products.
