Angolan monarch of Bailundo visits Brazilian community of slave descendants

The King of the Bailundo Kingdom in Angola, King Tchongolola Tchongonga Ekuikui VI, visited a community of self-escaped slaves in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The community, Quilombo do Camorim, has a history dating back to 1614 and residents welcomed the King with dancing and chanting. The visit is part of the King's three-week trip to Brazil, during which he has met with the Angolan diaspora. The King also visited a UNESCO world heritage site in Rio, the Valongo Wharf, where many African slaves made landfall. Brazil was the last country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery in 1888.
