The number of Chinese nationals seeking asylum in the United States has sharply increased, with over 4,000 arrests in September alone, a 70% rise from the previous month. In the past year, more than 24,000 Chinese nationals have made the journey through South and Central America to cross the US-Mexico border and apply for political asylum. This movement, known as the "run" movement, is driven by dissatisfaction with political totalitarianism and economic stagnation under Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping. The exodus has also been fueled by widespread lockdowns, quarantine camps, compulsory testing, and the ending of Xi's zero-COVID policy after protests.
