Kenya dam owner to compensate 2018 flooding victims

The families of the victims of the 2018 dam disaster in Kenya have reached a settlement with the owner of the facility. The owner has agreed to compensate the families with Ksh1.2 million ($8,000) for adults and Ksh800,000 ($5,300) for minors. The dam collapsed after heavy rains, causing widespread flooding and the loss of at least 47 lives, including 20 children. The owners were charged with several offences, including not conducting an environmental impact assessment and lacking a proper drainage system. Thousands of people were displaced as a result of the disaster.
