South Sudan: 1.6 million children at risk of malnutrition in 2024 (UN)

The UN World Food Programme has warned that over 1.6 million children under the age of five in South Sudan are at risk of malnutrition in 2024. The country, which has been plagued by instability and violence since gaining independence in 2011, is also facing extreme climatic events, including major floods. The floods have caused overcrowding and higher food prices, exacerbating the malnutrition crisis. The situation is particularly dire in the county of Rubkona, where vast areas of land have been submerged, forcing communities to live on small islands. The influx of South Sudanese fleeing war in Sudan has further worsened the food emergency.
