Vietnam has significantly expanded a reef in the Spratly islands in the South China Sea through dredging and landfill, increasing its reclaimed area to nearly 1 square kilometer. The reclamation work at Barque Canada Reef has been ongoing since the end of 2021. Vietnam has accelerated its reclamation efforts in the South China Sea over the past 10 years, creating a total of 540 acres of new land by the end of 2022.
