Colombia Hopes Sterilization, Transfer, Euthanasia Will Curb Hippos

Colombia is implementing measures to control its population of over 100 Hippos, descendants of animals brought illegally by drug lord Pablo Escobar in the 1980s. The government plans to use surgical sterilization, transfer the hippos to other countries, and potentially euthanize them. The hippos, which have no natural predators in Colombia, are considered an invasive species that could disrupt the ecosystem. Authorities estimate that without intervention, there could be 1,000 hippos by 2035. The first stage of the plan involves sterilizing 40 hippos per year, with the procedure costing around $9,800 each. Transfer to other countries, such as India, is also being considered.
