Armed jihadist groups have besieged at least 46 locations in Burkina Faso, preventing access to food and water and abducting women, according to Amnesty International. The tactic has been increasingly used by armed groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State since last year. Checkpoints, explosive devices, and occasional attacks are used to restrict movement. The northern Sahel and western Boucle du Mouhoun regions are particularly affected. Over 17,000 people have died in attacks since 2015, with more than 6,000 deaths this year alone. The conflict has also forced over two million people to flee their homes.
