Vietnamese police arrest dozens of construction site protesters

Dozens of construction site protesters were arrested by Vietnamese Police in northern Vietnam after days of protests against the US$30 million Long Son Container Port Project. The protesters, who were demanding satisfactory compensation and resettlement plans, were beaten with batons by police officers. Videos taken by residents showed police equipped with batons and shields, and at least one person sustained a head injury. Authorities jammed mobile phone signals and prohibited residents from filming the incident. The protests began on October 23 and have resulted in the start of leveling work at the construction site.
