NHS patients in England who have waited over nine months for treatment will be offered the opportunity to travel to other hospitals for quicker treatment. Up to 400,000 patients will be contacted and given the choice to be transferred to hospitals further away with shorter queues. The success of the plans depends on identifying spare capacity and patients' willingness to travel. Health officials said some funding would be available to help with travel expenses, but patients' groups urged the NHS to cover all costs. Currently, no NHS trusts in England are meeting waiting targets to treat 92% of patients within 18 weeks.
