Manila rejects Beijing’s account of sea encounter

Manila has rejected China's account of a military encounter near the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. China claimed to have monitored and warned off a Philippine warship that it accused of trespassing into the waters around the shoal. However, Philippine authorities denied this and stated that the warship conducted routine patrol operations without incident. This is the second time in three weeks that China has claimed the violation of its sovereignty over the shoal, but the Philippines maintains its right to patrol the area under international law. The incident is seen as a test of US commitment in the region.
