Over 100 miners managed to escape earlier, while the remaining workers were prevented from leaving by some of their colleagues demanding recognition for their unregistered labor union. The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) denied that anyone was held against their will, calling it a protest in support of the union.
