Alberta to harness artificial intelligence technology to predict forest fires before they begin

Alberta is investing in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to predict where wildfires may start, potentially saving up to $5 million per year. The partnership between Alberta's wildfire agency and software company AltaML aims to predict fire breakout locations one day in advance, allowing for better planning of resources. The AI software analyzes decades of data on fires in the province, combined with weather forecasting, to improve predictions over time. The technology is part of a larger grants program called GovLab, which involves collaboration between AltaML, the Alberta government, and non-profit innovation hub Mitacs.
