Why ‘The Art of War’ and Amy Schumer’s memoir are banned in U.S. prisons

According to a new report from PEN America, tens of thousands of books are being Banned or restricted by U.S. Prisons, including self-help books and novels. The most common reasons for bans are security and sexual content. Florida and Texas have the highest number of prison Book bans, with more than 22,000 books banned in Florida prisons and over 10,000 in Texas. The report highlights the lack of centralized record-keeping and the arbitrary nature of book banning in prisons. The restrictions can be content-specific or content-neutral, with some states only allowing books from approved vendors.
