GM profit hit by strikes, more losses loom if pickets spread

General Motors (GM) expects a Strike by auto workers to reduce pretax earnings by $800 million this year, with another $200 million per week in losses if the strike continues. The strike has already impacted GM's net income, which was down 7% in the third quarter, and the company has withdrawn its full-year earnings estimates. The strike has spared factories that produce GM's most profitable vehicles, but recent closures of plants by the United Auto Workers union demonstrate the increasing risks to these facilities. The strike has been ongoing for nearly six weeks, with 28% of the union's members on strike.
